Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019 – Festivals
In 2019, the honorable title "European Capital of Culture" will bear the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv and the Italian city of Matera. Over 500 events will be held throughout the year, covering not only Plovdiv but also the cities finalist from the second round of the competition – Sofia, Varna and Veliko Tarnovo.
The ceremony and events of the opening of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture will be on 11, 12 and 13.01.2019. One of the major events will be festivals. Check out these and plan your trip.
Electric Orpheus is merging music and dance with various styles and genres - rock’n’roll, space jazz and electro, DJ sets and performances. International and Bulgarian artists will take part in the festival. The editions of Electric Orpheus will be held in various quarters.

Location: Plovdiv and the region
The purpose of the festival is to show that Europe’s cultural links remain despite Brexit. One weekend of May will be full with series of city concerts of Bulgarian and British musicians. The last final show will be on Sunday when some 400 performers – professional musicians; choral formations from Plovdiv; students of jazz, classical music and folklore as well as amateur musicians will come together onstage.

“FARA – Bulgarian Association of Communications Agencies Festival”
Many professionals from the communications industry, directors, producers, leading advertisers, marketing experts, and media take part. Its programme boasts a bevy of international lecturers, who demonstrate different perspectives for the present and future of communications.

Music festival with many thrilling shows. World-famous opera performers and conductors from Europe, the United States, and Asia established Bulgarian singers and musicians will immerse you in a different world and fill your soul with inspiration for new feats.

“Anime & Gaming Festival”
This festival is dedicated to Japanese mass culture. A two-day event that will feature demonstrations and screenings, lectures. The programme includes a contest – people dressed as their favorite characters from Japanese animations.

“Puldin Ethno – Festival of Еthnic Culture”
The main events are positioned at various locations in The Old Town of Plovdiv. There will be a presentation of traditional national cuisines, a street bazaar of herbs, honey, spices, aromas, and antique books, paintings, souvenirs, and musical instruments. You will also have the opportunity to be part of open lessons and master classes, thematically related to the festival.

"Hills of Rock"
The ‘Hills of Rock’ festival is one of the major music events. Every year, world-class performers like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Sabaton, Airforce, and so on are guest in Plovdiv. In 2019 the groups will be Whitesnake, Disturbed and Garbage. The festival, as usual, will take place on the Rowing Chanal - on several scenes, each with its own musical style and sound. You can buy the tickets from the Eventim system. And if you are already in Plovdiv, you can buy a ticket directly from the Tourist Information Center, 1, Rajko Daskalov 1, or in the Ticket Center, Knyaz Alexander I.

The festival offers a varied and large-scale program in over 70 places around the city with free admission. Bulgarian and international artists will take part. Museums, galleries, cultural centers and cultural institutions, many Plovdiv clubs and open spaces are also included in the program. For the youngest viewers a special program "Little Night" will be held, which will surely excite and delight them.

"One dance week"
The festival is dedicated to contemporary dance and performance and one of the most famous dancers from Europe, Asia and America will take a part in it.

"Love Swing Dance Festival"
The festival’s second edition will take place in 2019. If you love swing so for sure not miss this festival. The programme includes international dance competitions, open-air swing lessons, dance evenings, evening parties to music from the 1920s, a city tour with live music and dancing.
