TOP 7 Most Powerful Spiritual Vortexes and Energy Places in Bulgaria

My name is Elena Filipenkova. I'm a runologist, I conduct Swaddling Rituals for women and men, and I work as an energy coach.

I've been living in Bulgaria for 15 years now, and I'm increasingly convinced of how powerful the land here is. People who relocate here permanently from other countries begin to discover hidden talents and extrasensory abilities within themselves after some time—this happened to me many years ago as well. I love visiting power spots, feeling the energy of these extraordinary places, and today I want to share with you 7 places that I particularly cherish in Bulgaria.

Tatul Sanctuary

Region: Rhodope Mountains, Southern Bulgaria

This is one of Bulgaria's most ancient and mysterious sanctuaries, located near the village of Tatul in the Rhodope Mountains. It's believed that this was a cult site connected to the mythical Orpheus—the singer, prophet, and symbol of the connection between worlds. The ancient Thracians had established this as an important spiritual center, and Bulgaria was a sacred land for many civilizations throughout history.

Tatul consists of megalithic rock formations with a peak shaped like a truncated pyramid. Inside are two sarcophagi carved directly into the rock, a rectangular bed (presumably an altar), ritual channels, and a three-meter-deep well. All of this creates a special feeling—as if you're in a place where space and time begin to flow differently.

LITTLE-KNOWN FASCINATING FACT!

During my visit to Tatul, I lay down in the upper sarcophagus—I'm 165 cm tall and my body fit perfectly inside it. I closed my eyes and experienced something similar to a levitation effect—as if my body became weightless and time stopped. However, it's worth noting: locals consider such actions disrespectful and view them as desecration of the sanctuary.

Belogradchik Rocks - One of the Best Places

My second favorite place is the Belogradchik Rocks—a unique natural phenomenon. These are natural rock formations reaching heights of 200 meters, formed over hundreds of millions of years.

I recommend visiting the rock formation shaped like the "Mother Goddess":

This is one of the most powerful spots in the complex. Near this rock, many people begin to cry—tears come spontaneously, without reason. Some feel deep peace, as if in a mother's womb. Others experience the opposite—rising anxiety, even fear. This is cleansing energy. Here, hidden traumas, emotions, and blockages surface.

"The All-Seeing Eye"

Not far from the "Mother Goddess" stands a stone formation resembling a huge Eye. They say it hears thoughts. Here you can shout out your intention or wish—and the returning echo sounds particularly powerful. It feels as though you've truly been heard.

The "Lovers" Rocks

The shape of these two rocks resembles a couple standing in embrace. This is a place for those seeking love or wanting to restore harmony in relationships. Some people leave notes at the base.

Tip: Embrace one of the rocks and mentally give thanks for love. Within a year, new heart space will open—either in the form of a person or as inner harmony.

Another Attraction - Lepenitsa Cave

If you're staying in the Belogradchik area overnight, definitely plan a visit to Lepenitsa Cave at sunrise. Cave entrance requires admission fee.

How to Get There

  • By car: 190 km from Sofia—about 3.5 hours, via E79 highway to Vratsa, then through Montana to Belogradchik.
  • By bus: From Sofia—departures from the central bus station (direction Belogradchik, via Vidin).
  • From the bus: From the Belogradchik station, you can walk to the beginning of the rock complex (15–20 minutes) or take a taxi.

  1. Where to Eat: After visiting the rocks, stop by the "Markashnitsa" tavern in the city center. This traditional establishment offers delicious home cooking and a cozy atmosphere. They serve Rhodope cuisine dishes. It's an excellent place to process your impressions and "anchor" the energy of the place with a delicious meal.

Saint Stoyna the Venerable, Zlatolist Village

Region: Southwestern Bulgaria

When I first heard about Saint Stoyna the Venerable, I was in Petrich, at the Vanga Museum. The curator, as if in passing, said, "Do you know who came before Vanga? The real prophetess... Stoyna." Then he gave me an email, saying: "If you want to know the truth about her—send your delivery address to this email. They'll send you a book. Just like that, free of charge." A few days later, before I'd even returned from my trip, I received a delivery notice—it was the book "Saint Stoyna the Venerable—the Uncanonized Bulgarian Saint." As if the place itself had called to me.

That's how I ended up at St. George's Church in Zlatolist village. This is the temple where people came seeking help from Saint Stoyna the Venerable. It has stood here for many centuries — built in the 12th century.

Inside the church, there's an image of a double-headed eagle on the floor, laid out in dark and light stone. If you stand exactly in the center, on the eagle's chest, and silently make one heartfelt wish while looking up, it will surely come true, but you must do this barefoot.

I never got the chance to make a wish, but my daughter did — she was 13 at the time. She shared that when you stand on this tile, you feel your whole body swaying in different directions.

Next to the temple stands an ancient plane tree that, according to legend, is over 1,300 years old. On one of its branches hangs a swing. Some people sit on it, others simply place their palm on the bark.

People say: "This tree is alive." It seems to hear. If you approach with kindness — it will give you strength.

this tree is alive

FASCINATING FACT!

Near the temple is Saint Stoyna's grave. I took several photos—and each one came out as if shrouded in white mist. No light, no sun—but the photos looked overexposed.

My phone was working perfectly fine, and other people get similar photos too. This is the luminous energy emanating from Saint Stoyna's relics.

What I love about Saint Stoyna the Venerable is that she could levitate, didn't eat meat, didn't drink alcohol—unlike Vanga, who always had a drink after her evening sessions. Even insensitive people will feel peace and tranquility in this place.

How to Get There

  • From Sandanski: 45 minutes by car
  • From Petrich: about 35 km by car
  • It's better to travel by car as public transport doesn't run there

Bulgaria, The Seven Rila Lakes

Region: Southwestern Bulgaria

I've completed the scenic Seven Rila Lakes route twice, following the teachings of Peter Deunov (Master Beinsa Douno), founder of the spiritual movement "White Brotherhood" in Bulgaria. This route, which I'm sharing with you, was passed on to me by my friend Polina Dushatskaya, who sadly is no longer with us. She suffered a stroke during our second day of traveling to the Rila Lakes, right near the "Rila Lakes" hut in 2023.

The Seven Rila Lakes have been an important spiritual destination where practitioners engage in dancing a circular dance known as paneurhythmy. When you world dance the paneurhythmy here, the connection to cosmic energy becomes particularly strong—a practice typical for the Bulgarian lands.

My Route and How I Recommend Experiencing the Rila Lakes:

Dolnoto Ezero (Lower Lake) – Birth

Symbolizes the beginning of life's journey, the soul's entry into the material world.

bulgaria seven rila lakes

Ribnoto Ezero (Fish Lake) – Transition

The passage between worlds, the state of awareness after birth, first steps, adaptation.

Trilistnika (Trefoil) – Fate/Karma

Symbol of branching paths, choice, and fate's influence. Here the soul encounters the consequences of its actions. If you look carefully at this photograph, you'll find the guardian of the place—those who protect the space.

This is why it's very important to understand that when we come to any energetic place, we are merely guests there, not masters, and we must observe proper etiquette accordingly.

seven rila lakes

Bliznaka (Twins) – Interaction

The energy of partnership, communication, reflecting the world through relationships with others.

Babreka (Kidney) – Purity

Connected to cleansing, emotional balance, moral and physical purity. This is my favorite lake, and an interesting fact is that the paneurhythmic dances of the "White Brotherhood" take place here.

Okoto (Eye) – Love

The deepest lake, symbolizing the opening of the heart, divine love, intuition, connection with higher dimensions.

Salzata (Tear) – Wisdom/Enlightenment

The highest positioned lake. Symbolizes enlightenment, purification through tears, spiritual ascent, union with the source.

How to Get There

  • From Sofia: by bus or car to Sapareva Banya (~1.5 – 2 hours)
  • From Sapareva Banya — minibus or taxi to Panichishte
  • From Panichishte — on foot (~1.5 hours uphill) or by lift (~20 min)
  • Return the same way.

I recommend staying at the "Rilski Ezera" hut, located right after the lift ascent. I stayed in a 4-bed room with bunk beds like in childhood.

Sofrata, Veselinovo Village - Rock Sanctuary

Region: Rhodope Mountains – Southeast Bulgaria

You can reach Sofrata (translated from Bulgarian as "low stone table") by car—it's convenient to park near the "Golemiyat Skok" waterfall. There's been no water in it for many years; it has dried up. From here begins the hiking trail to Sofrata itself.

Sofrata is a megalith, a rock sanctuary with a characteristic flat stone "platform" of circular shape, resembling a table. This site has been used for magical practices for communication with higher realms for centuries.

Locals told me secrets that sacrifices were allegedly once performed here, and the stone even "remembers blood"... But these stories, in my view, are more so-called folklore. For me, this place is a solar sanctuary.

Here you can feel the energy of a higher order—light, celestial. This is another prime example of energy vortexes in Bulgaria, where ancient Thracian rituals may have taken place.

Some come to make wishes, but in my experience, this place is not for asking, but for gratitude.

Here it's easy to enter a state of silence, light, and connection with something greater. Not for everyone, but those who are ready, it welcomes them.

bulgaria ancient thracian places

From the air, Sofrata looks like a large stone circle, almost perfectly integrated into the natural landscape. It appears carved into the earth and feels like a solar disk or altar directed toward the sky.

The entire structure is surrounded by dense forest. Such positioning cannot be accidental — it seems that for centuries, the place was used for rituals connected to the solar cycle, seasons, or spiritual transitions.

I recommend visiting Saraya Cave on the way back and bringing a headlamp to examine it completely.

The Eye Phenomenon (Okoto)

This place is considered one of the strongest energy points to visit in Bulgaria, and Baba Vanga herself said that Okoto possesses the ability to cleanse a person of fears, illusions, and mental noise. Research by a seer at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has documented unusual electromagnetic phenomena here.

Okoto is a natural rock formation shaped like a huge stone eye, positioned high in the cliffs above Osmar village. To feel the power of the place, you need to enter inside the "pupil"—into the niche. It's precisely there, according to many testimonies, that energetic work with the subconscious is activated. Over the years, a group of psychics appeared who regularly visit this site for its transformative properties.

My first visit was during torrential rain. When I entered the "eye," I was gripped by fear—it seemed like I would fall down. But the essence of this place isn't in frightening energy, but in deep cleansing from inner blocks. The Eye doesn't look outward, but inward into yourself.

The second time, in sunny weather, I embraced the "Eye" while inside it, and I didn't want to leave.

Before visiting this natural phenomenon, I recommend preparing yourself:

  1. Wash your eyes in the spring at the foot of the trail. This is symbolic cleansing of vision—not only physical, but spiritual.
  2. Stop at King Marko's Rose Garden (Gyuleto na Krali Marko)
  3. Enter Kostandinov Monastery, light a candle, ring the bells—let the sound attune you.
  4. Visit the dirikliya—ancient rock niches used by hermit monks. There's very powerful silence there.

The Stone Forest, Varna

Region — Stone Pillars Area: Varna

The Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani) is a famous natural wonder in Bulgaria and one of the most interesting places, frequently visited by tourists, especially near the city of Varna. But few know that there are other groups of these mysterious stone columns and pillars scattered throughout the territory. One of the most magical and least visited is the Kanarata group. Witnesses emphasised that Bulgaria has numerous such formations, many of which remain among the 140 cultural heritage sites of the Republic of Bulgaria.

stone forest varna

How to Reach the Kanarata Group - Route:

From Varna, take the road toward the lakeside route.

Pass through in sequence: → Kazashko village → Ezerovo village → Strashimirovo village → and Beloslav city.

When you pass the sign "end of Beloslav municipality," immediately after it turn right into the forest. Drive up the forest road, passing: a torn-up construction site, a narrow mountain ascent, until you reach an expansion where you leave your car. On foot, go left along the trail—it will lead you up to the place itself.

Important Warning:

Even when sharing precise information with others—people still wander, get lost, turn back... and find it only when they've almost given up.

This happened to me the first time too—as if the place itself decides whether you're ready to see it.

When you reach the summit, a view opens up over Varna Lake from above—an incredible feeling, as if you're standing on the border between worlds.

The heart of this place is the Heavenly Gates. These are two stone pillars standing opposite each other, forming a natural arch.

Directly opposite these gates stands a solitary poplar tree—you can find this place by this landmark.

Ritual:

Approach the Gates, embrace one of the pillars,

Think of one single, pure wish—only from the heart.

Stand under the arch for a few moments.

Bulgaria has many unexplored places and sanctuaries—I've shared my favorites. I would be delighted if this article helps you choose at least one of them to visit, and then share your impressions. Even if you're a skeptic, these places won't leave you indifferent.

With love, Elena.
